Obituary for John S. Luckstone

John S. Luckstone died Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. He was 88

John was born in Manhattan, NY, a Christmas Eve baby, on December 24, 1930. He was the son of the late Mary Stauffer and Harold C. Luckstone. After he married he moved to Rego Park, Queens, NY, then Roosevelt, Long Island where they lived for 20 years before moving to New Jersey in 1980.

John was a graduate of Harvard University, class of 1952, and Harvard Law School, class of 1955.

He served in the US Army from 1956 - 1958.

After the armed forces, John worked for Olwine, Connelly, Chase, O’Donnell & Weyher in Manhattan, NY. He then worked for the Bell System for 27 years. He specialized in Anti Trust Law and was very active in the 1974 antitrust law suit brought by the United States against AT&T. He retired from Bellcore in Livingston, NJ in 1992. After retirement, he served as outside counsel to Bellcore until 1997.

Throughout his life John was devoted to his family. He was a devout Catholic and a communicant at St. Vincent de Paul RC Church in Stirling, NJ where he served as an Eucharistic Minister, a Lecture, a teacher in CCD and Pre-Cana, and was a Knight of Columbus. He also served as head of the Holy Name Society at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, while in Long island.

John was director of the Old Guard of Summit. He was past president, served on the board, and was a stage manager at the Summit Play House in Summit, NJ, as well as the Stoney Hill Players. He sat on the Board of Education in Baldwin, LI, enjoyed swimming, gardening, was an avid reader and challenged himself with crossword puzzles. He loved the New Jersey Shore.

He was pre-deceased by his brother Harold C. Luckstone Jr., and his granddaughter Kimberly Rose. John is survived by his wife Sondra, daughters Valerie and Cathy, son-in-law, Chris, and 3 granddaughters: Caroline, Kaitlyn, and Lauren. He was blessed with a great-granddaughter Avery Marie.

Visitation will be Tuesday April 16, 2019 from 3 - 6 PM at St. Vincent de Paul RC Church in Stirling, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday 12:00 PM at the Church. Interment will follow at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Stirling. Arrangements are under the direction of the Valley Memorial Funeral Home 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ.
