Obituary

Claudia Eleanor Jardim passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the age of 58. She battled breast cancer for nearly 25 years with steadfast courage and optimism. Claudia was born in Newark, NJ on May 4, 1960 and was a life-long resident of Long Hill Township. Claudia was a beloved daughter of Joy Menza Jardim and the late Edward A. Jardim.

She attended St. Vincent de Paul School and graduated from Watchung Hills Regional High School in 1978. She received a BA in French from Montclair State College and earned her certification in elementary education.

Claudia worked as a teacher at public and private schools and most recently as a substitute teacher for the Bernards Township Board of Education. She was a volunteer with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) in Long Hill Township and the Township Election Committee. Claudia was creative and intelligent; she had a love of the arts and French culture and enjoyed playing the piano. Her faith sustained her, and she participated in many bible study groups.

She is survived by her loving mother, Joy (Menza) Jardim, three brothers: Edward Jardim and his wife Roselle, Matthew Jardim and his wife Janice Perlin, Thomas Jardim and his wife Karen Fountain, two sisters: Carla Jardim, and her husband John Gattuso, and Eleanor (Elle) Jardim. Claudia was a wonderful and loving aunt to her sixteen nieces and nephews: Michael, Mark, Thomas, Stephen, Sharonrose, Marisa and David Jardim, Giovanna, Reina, and Natalia Gattuso, Ethan and Sarah Jardim, Matthew Stern, and Cecile, Charlotte, and Nathaniel Fountain Jardim. She was cherished by her large extended family and many dear friends.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Blankstein and the Hunterdon Regional Care Center.

We welcome friends and family to a Celebration of Claudia’s life on May 4 from 12:30 pm to 4pm in the St. Vincent de Paul School gymnasium at 250 Bebout Ave., Stirling, NJ. There will be a Mass at the church preceding the celebration for those who want to join us in prayer at 11:00 AM. In Lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to The Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center’s Oncology Special Needs Fund, Flemington, NJ. I was saddened to hear the news of your sisters passing, Elle. I met Claudia a few times over the years that I spent with your family as one of Matthew’s caregivers. I remember in particular, one week that we were all out on Long Island together. Claudia would watch and talk to me about my work with Matthew and then make sure to tell your mom that Matthew was ok and working hard. Please say hi to your mom for me. I can only imagine what she is going through as I have always admired her for the love and devotion that she would so openly share with you, Claudia, and Matthew, even in my presence.
My deepest condolences to you and your family at this very hard time.

When I was in second grade I was fortunate enough to find a friend in Claudia Jardim. Throughout most of my years at St. Vincent de Paul Claudia was my best friend. Claudia and I laughed, cried, and negotiated all the trials and tribulations of growing up together. She spent a lot of time at my house and I spent a lot of time at her house. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive friend who loved and accepted me for who I was. We spent countless hours talking about life and what we expected from our future. Through it all the one thing that was a constant in her life, besides the love of her family, was her faith. Claudia was a sensitive, loving, and caring person who was a blessing to those who were fortunate to call her a friend. She will always hold a special place in my heart. Heaven has been graced with a beautiful soul. My deepest sympathy to the Jardim family. May the care and love of those around you provide you all with the comfort and peace to get you through this difficult time. With heartfelt condolence, Carole Walsh Ray

I am so very sad to learn of the passing of your sister Claudia, Ed. While I was never honored to have met her, I can only imagine how lovely and talented she was. Having known you for fifteen years, I know your sense of dedication to family and others is unmatched. I must assume this is the case with all in your family. My heart goes out to each of you in the Jardim family, as you each are losing someone so very special. No doubt there will be beautiful musical tributes at the farewell celebration of Claudia's life.
