Obituary for Antonio E "Tony" Salerno

Antonio "Tony" E. Salerno died Friday August 16, 2019 at his home in Basking Ridge, NJ. He was 78.
Tony was born on January 17, 1941, in the town and comune of Vallata, in the province Avellino, Campania Italy. A son to the late Luisa (Schiavino) and Giuseppe Salerno he immigrated to Newark, NJ in 1958 living in Berkeley Heights before moving to Basking Ridge 23 years ago.
He was educated in Italy, and upon his arrival to the United States followed in his family tradition of becoming a Master Tailor. At the young age of 17, he interned for many Master Tailors in Newark, NJ, learning the trade before achieving his goal and becoming a Master Tailor. He worked in several factories in Newark before working as a Tailor for Dan Manzi Showroom in South Orange, and was a Master Tailor for Macy's in Short Hills for the last 20 years.
Tony was a member of the Cultural Social Club, Societa Vallatese, in Newark. He loved to dance and play cards including his favorite, Scopa.
He was a devote parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul RC Church in Stirling, NJ where he served as an Usher for many years. He had a true devotion to Padre Pio.
He was predeceased by his parents Luisa and Giuseppe Salerno.
Tony is survived by his loving wife Nimfa (Monteser) Salerno, 2 daughters Louisa Salerno and Kathy Izzo and two grandchildren, Ashely and Dominick Izzo, his only sister Alfonsina and her husband Dr. Corrado Altomare, and their loving children Dr. Antonia Altomare and her husband Dr. John Mecchella and Corrado "Dino"John Altomare, II, and his wife Deanna. He is also survived by his adored grandniece, Sofia Grace, and grandnephew Nicholas Giovanni Mecchella.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 2-6 PM at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Monday, August 19, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul RC Church, 250 Bebout Ave in Stirling, NJ. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Ave., East Hanover, NJ. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul RC Church or Compassionate Care Hospice.
