Obituary for Claire Ruth Lander (West)
Claire Ruth (West) Lander died Saturday July, 4, 2020 at her home in Berkeley Heights, NJ. She was 94.
Claire was born in Philadelphia, March 28, 1926 a daughter to the late Clara (Zenker) and Andrew West. At age 11, Claire’s family moved to Delaware to help with the family farm. She was a graduate of John M. Clayton High School and Delaware Hospital School of Nursing. Claire worked as a Registered Nurse for Temple University for many years before becoming a homemaker.
Claire married Richard (Dick) Lander June 4, 1948. They moved to Berkeley Heights, NJ in 1954, where they raised their two sons, Russel and Richard. She was a very active member of Union Village United Methodist Church in Berkeley Heights, where she enjoyed quilting, singing in the choir and leading the youth group. Claire was a member of the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad and the Berkeley Heights Senior Citizens, was a Den Mother to her sons, and loved to garden. She also loved spending as much time as she could at her family home in lower Delaware.
Claire was pre-deceased by her husband of 52 years, Richard H. Lander, in 2000 and her brother Andrew J. West in 2007. Claire is survived by her sons Russel J. and his wife Irene M, and Richard H. and his wife Kathryn M, a sister Patricia A. Fogelson, 6 grandchildren Peter and his wife Kaitlin, Allison, Susan and her husband Marty Curro, Bonnie, Matthew and his wife Megan and David, 4 great grandchildren Luke, Mila, Grace and Clara, with another on the way.
Visitation will be Thursday July 9, 2020 from 4-7 PM at the Valley memorial Funeral Home 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
