Obituary for Frederick R Monroe

Frederick R. Monroe (Fred) passed away peacefully to be with God on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. He was 89.

Fred was born in Plainfield, NJ a son to the late Rose Monroe Mason nee: Shine and the late Howard A. Monroe. He has lived in Scotch Plains, Plainfield and Dunellen before moving to Gillette in 1982.

He served in the United States Navy as a Seabee from 1952 - 1960. While in the Navy he learned the trade of welding and retired early as a self-employed welder.

Fred was Proud to be an American, Veteran and member of the American Legion Post 484 where he served as the financial officer until it closed. He loved to take care of his tomato and flower garden and doing home improvement projects around the house. He was also an artist with many signs and cutouts in the front yard. Fred was best known for the Humpty Dumpty that sat on the wall on Valley Rd. in Gillette, NJ. He also was instrumental to having the plaque dedicated to Leo the Lion placed on Morristown Rd in Gillette, NJ.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Claire J., his 3 daughters Joan C. Monroe, Susan A. and her husband Richard Becker, and Lois Roberts, 4 grandchildren, Heather Monroe, Lauren and her husband Shaun Mixon, Robert Roberts, Jr. and Steve Roberts, and 3 great grandchildren, Penelope, Lucas and Elijah Mixon with whom he loved playing and laughing with.

Cremation was private. A Memorial Service and burial will be at Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sparta, NJ and will be held June 25th, 2022 at 10:30am under the direction of the Valley Memorial Funeral Home 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ.
