Obituary for Marlene A Cababe (Deptula)

Marlene Ann Cababe, a loving, devout, and creative woman died on Friday, October 27, 2023 at her home in Basking Ridge, NJ. She was 88.
Marlene was born in Newark, NJ on February 28, 1935, the daughter of the late Mary and Joseph Deptula of Newark, NJ. She was graduate of Irvington High School in Irvington, NJ, and attended St. Casmir’s Catholic Church in Newark in her childhood and elementary school days.
Marlene was a devoted wife for over 61 years to her late, loving husband Henry. They were married at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in West Paterson NJ (now Woodland Park, NJ). They met at a dance and enjoyed dancing with each other well into their eighties. She was also a poet. Two of her poems You Can’t Buy Time and Please Be Kind were published in Best Poets in 2015 and Beyond the Sea book series.
She was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Basking Ridge, NJ. She was a devout Rosarian and President of the Rosary Society, where she led successful fund-raising dances and church fairs for her parish. In addition to dancing and writing, she loved singing, drawing, and making soups. Marlene was especially known for making hundreds of soups at her friend’s parties and her family’s business. She starred in Annie Gets Your Gun in a local play group. Most important was the devotion to her faith and her family.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Henry, his sister, Sister Louise Cababe, a Dominican nun, her sister, Joyce and her daughter-in law Julie.
Her deep prayer life was handed down to her surviving sons and spouses- Chuck and his wife Joyce, Chris and his wife Sherry, Cliff, and Curt Cababe. She is also survived by her grandson Phillip Cababe.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 5-8 PM Valley Funeral Home, 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ. A welcoming of friends and family will begin at St. James RC Church in Basking Ridge, NJ followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ.
