James P. Hughes entered into Eternal Rest on December 25, 2023 at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. James “Jim” was born in 1941 to the late Lillian (Quinn) and Patrick Hughes in Newark, NJ. He lived in Bloomfield during his early childhood, before moving to Irvington in 1955. Jim was a long-time resident of Irvington before moving to Basking Ridge in 2019.
Jim was a graduate of Archbishop Walsh High School and Seton Hall University. He served as a member of the National Guard. He worked for the Social Security Division of Disability Determination for 35-years, where he was supervisor. He retired in 2008.
Jim was a deeply religious man and was a daily communicant at mass. He prayed the rosary daily. He served as a lector and cantor at St. Leo's RC Church in Irvington. Additionally, he was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus and the Serra Club of the Oranges. He had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother Mary. One of his favorite trips was travelling to Fatima, Portugal where the Blessed Mother appeared to 3 young children in 1917.
Jim was also a man of diverse interests and had a love for learning new things. He found great pleasure in teaching himself to play the keyboard and guitar, and learning how to speak and read Spanish, Portuguese, German and Gaelic. During the summer months, he enjoyed listening and watching Yankee games. He consistently offered an endless array of jokes to bring a smile to everyone’s faces. For many years, he was a loving caretaker to his mother, aunts and to those who needed a helping hand around his parish. Jim was a selfless, thoughtful man, who seldom spoke of his own accomplishments. He much preferred to listen and celebrate the success of his friends and family who he held so dear.
Jim is survived by his brother Patrick (Mary) Hughes, his sisters: Mary (Thomas) Giblin, Lillian Shaw, Sheila (Edward) O'Donnell. He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews:
