Obituary for John H "Jack" Doolin

John H. Doolin died December 30, 2016 at the age of 89. He passed peacefully at his home in Gillette, N.J. surrounded by his loving family.

“Jack” was born in Newark, N.J. on August 12, 1927, the son of Edward R. Doolin and Anna (Bachoffer) Doolin. He was raised in Irvington, N.J. with his sister Loretta (Doolin) Mahon who predeceased him. He attended St Leo’s Parochial School and St. Benedict's High School. In his younger years Jack enjoyed softball, building model planes and performing magic. He was drafted and served in the Army of Occupation in Augsberg and Landsberg, Germany. Jack and Joan lived in New Providence where they raised their family before moving to Gillette 37 years ago.

Jack attended Newark College of Engineering (NCE) on an academic scholarship graduating in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, He later obtained a Masters Degree from NCE and taught there until 1969. He worked with Worthington Pump and Machinery Corporation in Harrison, N.J. for 42 years retiring from his position as Director of Total Quality Management in 1992. He then worked for many years as a subject matter expert at the Hydraulic Institute in Parsippany, N.J., was a member of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), and additionally he holds several patents in his chosen field of pump design.

In retirement, Jack volunteered at Recording for the Blind and Dyslexia in Princeton, N.J. and at Literacy Volunteers of America. Locally he was a member of Long Hill Senior Citizens and a devoted parishioner at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

His wife Joan Marie (Schneider) Doolin survives him. Jack is also survived by his 5 children; Edward and his wife Maryellen, Mary and her husband Philip, Leonard and his wife Eileen, Thomas and his wife Ann-Marie, and Kathleen and her husband Jack. Jack was proud of his 10 grandchildren, John, Megan, Michael, Caitlin, Sean, Elizabeth, Tricia, Kyle, Garrett and Mary who were all the light of his life. Jack loved the many vacations and good times spent with his family. He will be dearly missed by his family who admired and loved him very much.

Visitation will be Tuesday January 3, 2017 from 4-8 PM at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home, 1012 Valley Road Gillette, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday January 4, 2017 at St Vincent de Paul Church Stirling, N.J. at 10 AM. Internment will follow at the Church’s Cemetery.
