In 1869, Andrew Heeney was born in Ireland. In 1909, his family moved to England. During World War I, his son, Thomas Anthony was drafted, and served on the front in Europe. After World War I, Thomas met and married Mary Cannon. They had a son named Joseph, a daughter named Anne, a daughter named Rose, and a daughter named Margaret. Then, they moved to the United States by boat, and entered through Ellis Island. After entering the United States, Thomas Anthony Heeney Sr. and his wife, Mary, had three more children: Theresa, John, and Thomas Anthony Heeney Jr. Their family first lived in Newark, then Union, after that they moved to Summit, NJ. Thomas A. Heeney Jr. was born in Newark, NJ, where he began grade school. While living in Newark, as a teenager, he showed at an early age a love for mathematics and science. His first job was at Thomas Edison Labs in West Orange, and he even had an opportunity to meet Nikola Tesla, who was working on his earthquake machine at the time.
Upon graduation from Union High School, Thomas worked at Vader Radio in Bloomfield with his brother, Joseph, and enrolled in Newark College of Engineering at night. At Vader Radio, he was approached and hired by recruiters for Union Carbide, where he worked in NJ for several years. After several years of working for Union Carbide, Thomas A. After his service in the army, Thomas returned to living in Meyersville, NJ, with his parents. Still employed by Union Carbide, he was given a promotion to work up at their research and development lab at Tarrytown, NY, where he managed their glass factory, and worked for over 30 years.
In 1968, Thomas A. Heeney Jr. met Elizabeth Warner. They married in November, 1969. They had a son named Thomas, and twin daughters Kathleen and Kelly. In 1977, they moved to Stirling, NJ, where they became active at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, in Girl Scouts, and in the local Boy Scout Troop 59.
When not at work, Thomas enjoyed taking his family hiking, swimming, fishing, to museums, and time spent with loved ones. He was an avid astronomer, and enjoyed explaining science to all who listened.
Thomas was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth; his parents Thomas and Mary; his brothers Joseph and John, and his sisters Margaret, Anne, Rose, and Theresa. He is survived by his son Thomas J. Heeney, his daughter Kathleen M. Heeney, and his daughter Kelly A. Heeney. He will be greatly missed.

Life Story for Thomas A Heeney Jr.

"A Poem for my Dad"
Written by Kathleen Marie Heeney

Thomas Anthony Heeney
Has all my life long
been a faithful Father and
a forever friend
I never knew the beginning of his enormouse love
and I shall never know its end
He arose early each morning
with Saint Joseph-like work ethic
Driving 2 and a half hours
to work hard for his paycheck
As a chemical engineer
With two US Patents in his name
He did not seek applause
great fortune or fame
Just the love of his family
hard work under the sun
And a well-grilled Chicken dinner
When Saturday Mass was done.
He sought simple pleasures
the love of my Mother
to see the success of my sister and brother
to see me healthy and strong
understanding our God
Reminding me that his
hero Nikolai Tesla
in science has trod
As a poet and mystic, though researcher be
Seeing the Lord in each atom, electron and galaxy.
His legacy that
of a hard working man
Masculine, athletic, devoted
to plan
Each day as a gift from the Lord up above
not to think of ourselves
to labor with glove
On the swimming pool, lawn
mower, and station wagon
Smiling as abilities
inspired his American flag on
Sundays and Patriotic holidays
He served our country in great
and small ways.
Becoming a Hero in his own backyard
working around the house
Dad did not think it hard
to help family and spouse
So that serving the Lord was not
a burden or chore
but a pleasure beyond telling
of the love that he bore
for family.
Long will live Dad's hard to obtain legacy
of putting his family first as a Man, A Father, A Husband and Friend
Faithfully Recovering for 30 years
after a bend
in the Road brought him to the gift of Serenity.
He unfolded like an open book
so that all could see the man behind the
sheer hard work
Knowing the tenacity
that staying sober took
For all to world to see
that he thought every sacrifice was worth it
simply because he loved you and me.
