Lifelong Stirling Resident, 74, Beloved Father and Grandfather;
Avid Sportsman

George E. Thoms died Thursday April 19, 2018 in Basking Ridge, NJ after a long illness. He was 74.

George was born in Morristown, NJ on August 23, 1943, a son to the late Mary (Falzarano) and Richard Thoms. He was a lifelong resident of Stirling.

Following graduation from Watchung Hills Regional High School in 1961 he served on active duty in the US Navy from 1961 through 1963.
Following his Navy service, George began a 42-year career as an electrician with IBEW Locals 581 and 102 retiring in 2005. In the latter part of his working years and into his retirement, George continued his career as an instructor in the union’s electrician apprentice program. Locally he served as a Special Police officer with the Passaic (now Long Hill) Township Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1988 after 19 years of service.

A lifelong resident of Stirling, he was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Stirling.

As a young member of the Passaic Township Boy Scouts, George developed a love for the outdoors and was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, including numerous expeditions to Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. Throughout his life, George loved his prized gun collection of over 50 shotguns, rifles, and handguns.

George was pre-deceased by his brother Richard in 1944 and his sister Anne in 2013. He is survived by his son Richard S. Thoms and his wife Allyson, a daughter Christine and her husband Manuel Serrano, a brother John Thoms and his wife Patricia, and seven grandchildren; Lily, Caroline, Elizabeth, Cooper, Gabriela, Angelina, and Daniela. He is also survived by his niece, Kara Thoms and nephews John Thoms and David Thoms, and his grand-niece Addison Thoms, and grand-nephews Bauer Crooks and Kellen Thoms.

Visitation will be on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home, 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ from 4 - 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday April 23, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Stirling. Interment will follow at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Stirling.
