Obituary

Marian Quealy Zoll, age 94, a long-time resident of Millington, NJ, died peacefully Saturday January 5th at Sunrise Senior Living of Basking Ridge.

Born April 26, 1924 in Brooklyn NY, Marian was the daughter of the late Mary and Matthew Quealy. In addition to her parents, Marian is predeceased by her brother Matthew and her husband Edward.

A pioneer in Early Childhood Education, Marian graduated from Fontbonne Hall and Saint Joseph’s College for Women and became a teacher. After her marriage, she and Eddie had five children whom she stayed home to raise and often referred to as “my own nursery school.” Meanwhile, she remained actively engaged in public and social issues, always ready to offer her opinion on current events.

In addition to being a wife and mother, Marian faithfully performed the duties of a Catechist for over 40 years, ministering to the children of the Saint Vincent de Paul parish. She was also an active member of the Rosary Society, the Liturgy Committee, and the National Council of Catholic Women, as well as a Eucharistic minister, visiting the homebound and the “elderly” well after many considered her to be in the same categories.

In her later years, she enjoyed chatting, gardening, and walking with the residents and staff of Sunrise Senior Living Community, and especially valued visitations from her family. Always positive, encouraging, and child-centered, Mrs. Zoll was a frequently requested guest reader of children’s books well into her nineties.

Marian is survived by children Peter, Monica, Susan, Ellen, and John; grandchildren Deidre, Cecilia, Philip, Shanti, Paul, Max, Janna, Mattaniah, Noah, Micah, and Hannah; and great-grandchildren Michael, Matthew, and Marcus.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Vincent de Paul RC Church, Stirling, NJ on Saturday, January 12 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be 10:00 AM in the Church. Condolences for the family may be left at www.valleymemorialfuneralhome.net

My sincerest and deepest condolences to the wonderful Zoll family. I met Ed and Marian in 1960 when Ed and I were both appointed to the Mathematics Department at Newark State Teachers, now Kean University. We became the fifth and sixth members of that department. Ed and I worked well together. Marian joined the Faculty Wives group. Ed and my husband Hy played chess frequently. We visited the family in Millington. So much has happened since then, but I cherish those early days. Now Hy, Ed, and Marian have passed and I am ninety years old. Marian and I continued to have phone conversations for many years till quite recently. I will miss her, as I know all who knew her will.

It was with sadness that we heard of Marian's passing. A longtime neighbor with a smile on her face and Irish twinkle in her eyes, Slowly but steadily the neighborhood changes. The immigrants from Brooklyn, Jersey City and Ohio are gone as well as their many children who had much fun playing and growing up in this place called Millington. Kindergarten, elementary school, high school and on to college and universities and now to jobs and places far away. Memories .....

She has left us, and will remain in our minds until as we too must leave someday.

Our sympathies to the whole family.
